It is around us everyday, but what actually is PVC?
Polyvinyl Chloride, also known as PVC, is the third most commonly produced polymer – behind polyethylene and polypropylene. It tends to be used for a variety of applications, due to its range of beneficial properties. PVC is also fairly cheap to produce, and therefore purchase, and this allows it to be used on a mass scale without having to worry about price. PVC also tends to be more flexible and lightweight that other material options.
The process of making PVC is a fairly complex process, from both a chemical and technical standpoint. It consists of the polymerisation (the joining together of small molecules to make longer molecules) of vinyl chloride – that is a combination of chlorine and ethylene. The two raw materials – chlorine ad ethylene – are extracted from natural gas by the process of thermal cracking, and they are then converted.
As you can imagine, this is a highly technical process, with many safety precautions being needed, so it tends to be done on a large scale with very specialist equipment.
So, as we can see it is a fairly lengthy and complex process needed to create PVC – so why is it so popular to use? The reason so many companies love PVC is down to the fact that it is so flexible, so people can shape it to meet their needs. Despite the fact it is so flexible, it can maintain both strength and durability – which makes it ideal for many industrial uses. PVC is also known for its long life, which means it can perform whatever function it is used for, for many years without deteriorating which, therefore, saves on replacement or repair work. PVC also tends to be more resistant to such common issues as corrosion and damp.
So, the fact that PVC is so versatile and also strong at the same time means that is used for a wide variety of things, on both a small and large scale. Many industrial firms use PVC in the form of PVC Strip Curtains, as these can create a barrier between the interior and exterior atmospheres whilst also allowing easy access into and out of the building. Another property of PVC that makes it ideal for strip curtains is the fact that it is water resistant, so provides an excellent moisture barrier too.
So, when you put all the beneficial properties of PVC together, you can see what an excellent choice it is for use as a strip curtain material. The primary function of a PVC Strip Curtain across a doorway, is to provide seamless access whilst ensuring temperature is regulated – this is most important at somewhere like a manufacturing plant or warehouse, where a large quantity of physical goods will need to be brought in and out. The temperature regulation property also comes in useful for businesses where there is fresh food involved, as the PVC Strip Curtain will allow for a particular temperature to be maintained, in order for the fresh food to not spoil. On top of this, PVC door curtains can also ensure that no unwanted insects or animals can enter the building, which can again prevent problems with fresh food.
